NTSA groups Kenyan driving licences into categories based on vehicle type and weight. Picking the wrong class is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes new learners make.

Class A1 covers light motorcycles. A2 is what boda boda riders and motorcycle couriers need. If you plan to earn from a motorcycle, A2 is your target.

Class B1 is for automatic light vehicles up to 3,500 kg — great if you’ll only drive automatic cars. B2 is manual light vehicles and is more flexible: you can drive both manual and automatic in most cases. Most Kenyan private drivers pick B2.

Classes C1, C and CE cover trucks, from light (3,500–7,500 kg) up to heavy trucks with trailers. D1, D2, D3 and D4 are for vans, buses and PSVs — matatu and bus drivers need these.

G is for construction equipment (forklifts, graders, excavators). F is a special class for drivers with disabilities using adapted vehicles.
